ARFID is a serious, often-missed diagnosis that affects up to 25% of children seen in clinical settings — and most clinicians have never been trained to recognize or treat it. This training changes that.

Nutrition 101 for Eating Disorders is a professional mini training series hosted by Christy Maloney, RD, LDN, CEDS-C — a Registered Dietitian and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist with over a decade of clinical experience treating eating disorders at every level of care.

This fifth installment covers ARFID — Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder — a diagnosis that affects 3–5% of the general population, causes real physical and psychological impairment, and requires a distinct clinical approach that goes well beyond "encouraging more variety." If you've ever felt unsure how to assess or treat ARFID, this training gives you a clear, driver-informed framework you can put to work immediately.

🎯 What You'll Learn

By the end of this training, you'll be able to:

  1. Nutrition Assessment — Identify ARFID presentations across the three driver profiles, use validated screening tools, and conduct a comprehensive clinical interview
  2. Physical Signs & Symptoms — Recognize the medical and nutritional consequences of ARFID — including growth failure, micronutrient deficiencies, and GI complications
  3. Nutrition Interventions — Apply profile-matched, evidence-based nutrition therapy: food chaining, sensory exposure, anxiety-based strategies, and appetite support
  4. Higher Level of Care — Identify medical, nutritional, and functional criteria that indicate the need for step-up to more intensive treatment, including tube feeding

📖 What's Covered

This training walks through the three ARFID driver profiles:

  • Sensory sensitivity
  • Fear of aversive consequences
  • Low interest / low appetite

You'll learn how to assess each using validated tools including the PARDI interview, the 9-item ARFID screen, and the 8-item rapid screen — and how to match your intervention strategy to the specific driver at play. The training also covers the physical signs ranging from growth faltering to nutritional deficiencies, the most common micronutrient gaps (iron, zinc, and vitamin D), and the critical role of the interdisciplinary team — dietitians, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech-language pathologists, and physicians — in effective ARFID care.
