It's the most commonly diagnosed eating disorder in adults — and one of the most misunderstood, dismissed, and underdiagnosed in clinical practice. If you've ever felt uncertain about OSFED, this training is for you.
Nutrition 101 for Eating Disorders is a professional mini training series hosted by Christy Maloney, RD, LDN, CEDS-C — a Registered Dietitian and Certified Eating Disorders Specialist with over a decade of clinical experience treating eating disorders at every level of care.
This training covers OSFED — Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder — a diagnosis that affects approximately 6% of people in their lifetime and yet is routinely dismissed, minimized, or mismanaged in clinical settings. Often written off as a "lesser" diagnosis, OSFED carries serious medical risk, significant diagnostic complexity, and requires the same clinical rigor as any other eating disorder diagnosis.
This training gives you the tools to recognize it, assess it accurately, and treat it with the weight-inclusive, subtype-informed lens it deserves.
🎯 What You'll Learn
By the end of this training, you'll be able to:
- Nutrition Assessment — Understand the OSFED umbrella: identify subtypes, screen effectively, and navigate the diagnostic complexity unique to this diagnosis
- Physical Signs & Symptoms — Recognize that physical findings in OSFED vary by subtype and may be subtle — learn what to look for across the spectrum
- Nutrition Interventions — Apply individualized, subtype-informed nutrition therapy with evidence-based strategies drawn from AN, BN, and BED frameworks
- Higher Level of Care — Identify when OSFED presentations — despite not meeting full criteria — warrant urgent step-up in care
📖 What's Covered
This training walks through all five DSM-5 subtypes of OSFED:
- Atypical Anorexia Nervosa
- Subthreshold Bulimia Nervosa
- Subthreshold Binge Eating Disorder
- Purging Disorder
- Night Eating Syndrome
You'll learn the specific assessment approaches, physical signs, and intervention strategies for each subtype — including a critical look at weight suppression and why BMI alone should never drive your treatment decisions. Special attention is given to atypical anorexia, where medical risk is as serious as traditional AN, and to the role of weight bias in how clinicians assess and refer clients for higher levels of care.
